Screen gain
One of the most often quoted properties in a home theater screen is the gain. Gain is the measure of reflectivity of light compared to a screen coated with magnesium carbonate. Magnesium carbonate evenly distributes light in every angle from light hitting its surface, therefore this substance is given the standard designation of 1.0 gain.

Tribal Screens is committed to premium quality screen materials that measure light reflectivity based on the magnesium carbonate standard. Our Diamond Series white screen material is a 1.0 gain white screen that evenly reflects light in every direction. Our Platinum Series gray screen material is a 0.8 gain material that evenly reflects light in every direction but with a light absorbing component that actually reduces the light energy being reflected from the screen. This is important in higher ambient light environments where you want to absorb ambient light and create better contrast with darker blacks.

The Science of Tribal Screens
Educating you in the science of projection screens.

Aspect ratio
The traditional aspect ratio for standard definition television is 4:3.  This means the length of the screen is 4 units long and the height is 3 units high.  The growing popularity of the a widescreen ratio of 16:9, which is 16 units long and 9 units high, is a modern advancement for using HDTV (High Definition Television), DVDs and video games.  Tribal Screens only sells projection screens in the 16:9 aspect ratio.  They are, however, compatible for viewing older 4:3 signals and the cinema ratio of 2.35:1.
Gray screens
A relatively recent attempt in improving the perceived image quality is the introduction of gray screens, which are more capable of darker image tones than their white counterparts. Contemporary gray screens are designed to have a gain factor similar to those of matte white screens, but a darker appearance. A darker (gray) screen reflects less light, of course — both light from the projector and ambient light. This decreases the brightness of both the projected image and ambient light, so while the light areas of the projected image are dimmer, the dark areas are darker; white is less bright, but intended black is closer to actual black. The result is an improvement in perceived contrast ratio.

Our Platinum Series 0.8 gain gray screens improve your contrast ratio when viewing in environments with some lights or sunlight present.  We recommend our gray screen for these lighting conditions.
Texture Rich Top Coat PVC
Texture Rich Top Coat PVC screen material is superior to other screen materials because its angular light reflection reflects light evenly in every direction. By controlling the textured surface of the screen we can control the direction light will reflect off of the screen surface.

Most textured walls in a home are not evenly controlled to directional disperse light. Light reflection off of a painted textured wall surface creates inconsistencies in reflection and variable gain throughout the video image.  Tribal Screens has a created a surface that evenly reflects light in every direction giving you consistent gain for the maximum viewing angle of 180 degrees.

92", 100", 106" sizes
Tribal Screens are currently offered in three sizes.  We are committed to video excellence and these three sizes are the most popular sizes of projection screens for creating clear, bright, contrasted images.  Almost all projectors are produced for optimal viewing in these screen sizes.  It is our goal to provide you with a projection screen solution that works with your projector purchase.

These screen sizes will maximize the effectiveness of your projector for an immersion video experience that harmonizes the elements of brightness, contrast and color in your video image.

Image brightness and contrast
Apparent contrast in a projected image - the range of brightness - is dependent on the ambient light conditions, lumen power of the projector and the size of the image being projected. A larger screen size means less light lumens per square foot of the viewing surface and therefore has less contrast in the presence of ambient light.  Tribal Screens are only available in a size range that gives you the most flexibility for various lighting environments.  We do not sell 'oversized' screens that will critically degrade your image quality.

"This was the best site I have ever seen regarding home video projector screens. They sell one product and are masters of it. They give more than ample information. This is a site I would buy from w/out hesitation."
